It's official: Taunton River is "Wild & Scenic"

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25. 2009 -- The House today passed legislation designating the Taunton River as "Wild & Scenic." The bill now heads to the White House where President Obama is expected to sign it into law. This is a major victory for Save The Bay and friends of the Taunton.

Over the past decade, Save The Bay has worked with local partners to press for “Wild & Scenic,” a prestigious and potent national designation by the National Parks Service that will help protect the river while placing it in the national spotlight.

Protecting the Taunton is important to Narragansett Bay because the Taunton River watershed forms a large portion of the Bay's watershed. Watch a YouTube video in which Save The Bay's John Torgan explains why "Wild & Scenic" means so much to the Bay and its watershed.

“Today’s historic vote represents a major milestone in our efforts to protect Narragansett Bay," says Save The Bay Executive Director Jonathan Stone. "We have long recognized the critical importance of the Taunton River to the larger ecosystem. Thanks to the efforts of our great partners and the Congressional Delegations of both Rhode Island and Massachusetts, as the nation officially recognizes it in law.”
